The most common type of spyware is more properly termed adware, and its main aim is to generate pop-up and other advertisements. More problematic is the software that collects information through the user's keystrokes, or changes the configuration of your computer, all without your knowledge and consent. The result could be that you could experience continual pop-up ads, your home page is different to what you have set it at, or your computer will slow down or crash each time you use it. While there are a number of ways it happens, the most common is that the software is secretly installed on your computer during the installation of software that you agree to, such as a music or video file sharing program.
