As noted in our December 2000 Report, "Prime Time Nears for Interactive TV in Europe," digital transmission of TV, combined with added intelligence in set-top box (STB) operating systems, is revolutionizing the venerable broadcast medium. The ramifications of the digital upgrade go far beyond the closed walls of the TV world. As Exhibit 1 shows, digital TV penetration in Europe will surpass Internet adoption by 2005. The success of the revived medium with its interactive capability has implications for BtoC companies hoping to attract revenues from advertising and transactions from e-commerce. By 2006, we estimate that revenues from pay-per-view and TV-based e-commerce will reach $15 billion in Europe. In this Report, we examine adoption of digital TV (DTV) and interactive TV (ITV) in Europe, focusing on each delivery platform and relative adoption country by country.
