Book Description
Internet use in Brazil is beginning to take off as new technologies emerge and competitive access providers widen the local bandwidth bottleneck. The restructuring of the Brazilian telecommunications industry and consequent arrival of competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) are also contributing to the improvement of last-mile connections, and this will ultimately increase Internet penetration beyond high-income market segments. This has attracted significant competition, investment, and Internet services improvement, which will ultimately encourage adoption. The Yankee Group sees the Brazilian Internet user base reaching roughly 9.0 million by the end of this year, growing to 25.9 million by the end of 2001 (see Exhibit 1). Still, the Internet has a number of barriers to overcome, like low user and PC penetration levels, low connection speeds and poor local infrastructure, and high tariffs to the consumer, among others. In this first installment of a two-part Report, we address the major factors shaping the Internet industry in Brazil. In Part 2, we will look at the main players this market is attracting and related acquisition trends. While we believe that the Internet has great growth potential in Brazil, the nature of this opportunity is only now being shaped, and much has yet to happen before the Internet becomes a vital part of Brazilians' lives.
