You've made it to this page, so chances are good that you have the Internet more or less figured out. Your friends and relatives, however, may be another story, and perhaps you're perpetually answering elementary questions about it. Proposed solution: give them the Internet Bible as a gift. This detailed but friendly volume explains how to get connected to the Internet and what to do once you're there. It emphasizes Windows in the section on connectivity and mentions Macintosh software only now and then, so a Mac user who needs help getting connected might not find this book helpful. The guided tour of Internet resources will be helpful to anyone with a working connection.

Too many directories for beginners are exercises in the obvious, but the Internet Bible is a welcome exception. Considerable effort clearly went into the creation of the site directory. For example, the section on air freight companies goes beyond the expected brand names to list companies that deliver to Africa and Russia. Following the directory is an unremarkable section (again Windows-centric) on Web design and publishing tools, which explains how to build a simple home page, complete with graphics and links. --David Wall

Topics covered: The fundamentals of the Internet for home and small-business users,including information on selecting an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and getting connected via a modem, plus detailed instructions on using Web browsers, mail programs, chat software, and other Internet tools. A directory of Web sites, newsgroups, and other resources to explore on the Web.

From Library Journal
Appropriately titled, this 1000-plus-page work covers service providers, E-mail, searching the web, creating content, E-commerce, and even Internet relics such as Gopher, BBS, and telnet. The accompanying CD-ROM includes popular web browsers, compression software, an "HTML Reference Library," and much more. Almost too comprehensive for circulating collections, this is a good book to have in the computer lab or by the reference desk for all manner of Internet-related questions. Essential. About the Authors Brian Underdahl is the well-known, best-selling author of over 48 computer books including several current titles from IDG Books Worldwide: Windows 98 One Step at a Time, Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 97, Teach Yourself Windows 2000 Professional, Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 2000, and Opera Web Browser For Dummies. Brian spends most of his time at the keyboard writing about personal computing. When he finds the time he enjoys taking in the view from the home he and his wife Darlene built in the mountains 2000 feet above Reno, NV. He tries to find the time to attend Mensa meetings whenever possible, and has become a fairly decent gourmet cook in recent years, too. Keith Underdahl is an author living in Albany, Oregon. He has served as writer or technical editor on dozens of books, including IDG's Teach Yourself Microsoft Word 2000, Teach Yourself Microsoft Office 97, and Internet Bible. Keith is also a development team manager for Ages Software, where he specializes in electronic preservation and publication of historic Christian literature. When he is not goofing off with computers, Keith is the Pacific Northwest editor for Street Bike, a print and online magazine serving motorcyclists in the western United States. Kathy E. Gill is a communications consultant specializing in Web design, writing, and training; she "speaks" Macintosh, Windows, and Linux (in that order). Her first IDG project was on Webable: Making Web Sites Accessible to People With Disabilities. She has worked with Boeing and AT&T Wireless, teaches at Seattle-area community colleges, and is an adjunct professor at Pacific Lutheran University. When not lecturing or tip-tapping at her keyboard, she can be found motoring around Washington State on her BMW R65. John Preisach has worked on numerous IDG projects including the Internet Bible, Teach Yourself Windows 2000, and Windows 98 One Step At A Time. He is currently a tank commander for the Nevada National Guard and works as a technical instructor for a major software and hardware manufacturer.

Reader review(s):

This book is the complete guide and reference Manual., October 28, 1998
I am steadily working through the book and have found it to be excellent. The index covers as many topics as you can imagine plus a whole lot more!

Well Named Book!, December 20, 2000
Internet Bible, 2nd Edition is a very informative reference book covering the whole spectrum of Internet from modem configuration to ISPs, browsers, e-mails, search engines to creating web contents. The CD-Rom adds further value to this piece of reference work which has been priced very reasonably.

Some of the other topics covered by this book are essential for every web user which includes online privicy and security, protecting kids on the Internet, online shopping, gaming and business and NetMeetings.

I will recommend this book to anybody who would like to learn the Internet and the World Wide Web from scratch and would like to find everthing that he or she is looking in one book!!

It was very helpful, June 12, 1998
